TYPES OF GLAUCOMA
OPEN-ANGLE GLAUCOMA
This is the most common type of glaucoma. The structures of the eye appear normal, but fluid in the eye does not flow properly through the drain of the eye, called the trabecular meshwork. Most people don’t notice any discomfort or vision changes in the early stages of the disease which is why early detection with a dilated eye exam is important.

Symptoms of advanced open-angle glaucoma can include:
-
gradually developing blind spots in your side vision or “tunnel vision”
-
difficulty seeing in low light or when lighting conditions change
-
in later stages, difficulty seeing in your central vision
ANGLE-CLOSURE GLAUCOMA
This type of glaucoma is less common but can cause a sudden buildup of pressure in the eye. Drainage may be poor because the angle between the iris and the cornea (where a drainage channel for the eye is located) is too narrow, or the pupil opens too wide, narrowing the angle and blocking the flow of the fluid through that channel.
Symptoms of angle-closure glaucoma can include:
-
eye pain
-
blurring of vision
-
colored halos around lights
-
nausea and vomiting
-
red eyes
-
headaches

Sudden and severe onset of these symptoms together is an eye emergency and needs to be evaluated and treated immediately. Call our office right away!
