WHAT IS AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION?

MD1.jpg

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is the most common cause of legal blindness in individuals 65 years or older. This condition affects the macula, the sensitive middle portion of the retina that is responsible for fine central vision (reading, driving, recognizing faces) and color perception. The condition is broadly divided into two forms: a “dry” form and a “wet” form.

To best screen for and diagnose this condition, a complete dilated eye exam is recommended.  Your doctor may also recommend advanced retinal imaging in the office on the day of your exam.  Age-related macular degeneration requires continued periodic monitoring by your eye doctor with the frequency depending on the severity of the disease.  Progression to more advanced stages typically requires referral to a retinal specialist for treatment.
