DRY EYE TREATMENT

Suffering from itchy, red, stinging eyes?

Is your vision looking a little blurry?

Does your vision seem to go in and out of focus?

Do you experience watery eyes?

It could be Dry Eye Syndrome.

WHAT CAUSES DRY EYE?

Dry eye occurs when our eyes do not make enough tears or tears evaporate off the eye too

quickly. Tears are essential because they provide nutrients to the eye, keep the eyes moist, and protect the eye from irritants and infection. Tears are made of three components: oil, water, and mucus. These components help your tears perform duties essential to ensuring that the eye surface is healthy. If one or more of these components are lacking, your tear quality and homeostasis are disrupted, and the surface of your eye may become dry.

Here are some of the most common causes of Dry Eye Syndrome:

AGE

Aging can cause changes to the anatomy of the eye which can result in decreased tear film or disrupted blinking mechanisms.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS

Rheumatoid Arthritis, Rosacea, Sjogren's syndrome, and other autoimmune disorders can cause dry eye.

GENDER

Dry eye is more prevalent in women vs. men, likely due to hormonal changes, especially during menopause and pregnancy.

MEDICATIONS

Certain medications, like antihistamines and decongestants, can contribute to dry eye symptoms.

SCREEN TIME

More screen time leads to decreased blinking, which reduces the amount of tears we produce and causes them to evaporate quickly.

ENVIRONMENT

Changes in seasons or even dry or windy environments can cause changes to how your tears to evaporate.

Dry eye can be annoying and even debilitating. It is extremely common and can be a chronic and typically progressive condition.  In most cases, dry eyes can be managed successfully, resulting in noticeably greater eye comfort, fewer dry eye symptoms, and sharper vision.

HOW CAN I GET RELIEF FROM DRY EYES?

An eye exam can help you get to the root cause of your dry eye and start on the path to relief. Using frequent artificial tears, taking breaks when reading or using the computer, and modifying one’s environment to avoid direct exposure to wind, air conditioning vents, etc., are typically the first lines of treatment.

If this produces insufficient relief, a customized regimen may be recommended by our doctors including medications, eyelid care techniques, punctal plugs and specialized lubricants.
